Chapter 23-07: Virgin Twitter Event - #TweetTuesday

Woah. Just got back from my FIRST ever Twitter event. Never did know that social media can be so serious and so impactful. Well, that was before I joined BLUE and started ramping through heaps of data regarding measuring social medias and the value it bring to the company and the brand.

The experience was great. I would say it is the most insightful 1.5 hours of my life. Am so glad that I could get some pointers from the experts that are in the field for a long time compared to me showing to the juniors, or in my case the newbie their battle scars and their experience with it. What is good and what is bad.

Desiree Goh (@thelensmen) spoke about her experience in running the company’s account. Which is fairly beneficial for me and my colleague - Nuttakorn (@nuttakorn), since we are put in charge of our company’s account (@BlueSingapore).

“The company needs a voice of its own.”

This sets me thinking, what should be BLUE’s voice? If it is too formal and too professional, people might not engage the company as frequent as possible. If the profile is too overly chatty and not constructive towards what the company is doing, people will just unfollow it in the end. *Dilemma…*

On the other hand, I’ve made a couple of friends from the event as well.

Carl (@CarlGriffth) has a long experience in social media. He actually initiated the first twitter event 1.5 years ago. That time, I think I’ve just registered my twitter account because other people are doing so. And like many others wondering what is so great about looking at heaps of text updates. Carl also started his own company and utilized the social media to get the best out of it. Maybe Alan (alan_phua) and Verleen (@verleengoh) can get some insights and tips from him =)

Robin (@robin_low) is currently perusing his PhD at Harvard in Digital Communications. He gave me a lot of idea and clarified some of the myths I’ve been having. He actually created a twitter account for his pet cat after much inspiration from his friend when he was overseas. And his cat’s account has more followers than him. That idea excites me and motivates me to try and start an account for the company’s pet chinchilla (Yes. BLUE has a pet chinchilla running around sometimes to make it livelier) and tweet about random things in the company and create a fun identity that is embedded in BLUE’s company culture.

On my side, I think I will start another account twitter about more influential and useful stuff. Currently my account (@fernyit) is tweeting about news that I’m interested in, sharing articles and also some other random stuff. My followers might feel confused as well as they might be expecting different things. I will also come up with a new blog real soon. Originally was suppose to debut last week, but I still have some things to learn in order to utilize and unleash the full potential of the digital media.

It was a great and insightful evening. Btw, Myat (@MgGuGu), Jason (@jasonscliew) and me are entering the Lufthansa social media case challenge. Wish us luck =)

Once again Thank You Zam(@omgzam) for organizing and The Garden Slug (@thegardenslug) for the awesome food! We will go back some time soon in the future.

Heading to bed soon! Good night people!

Chapter 23-06: The Second Wave

Well, nothing beats a weekend of rest. not sure what got into me, but the whole week i've been sleeping a lot. or rather, sudden coma once i got back to the hostel and after my warm shower (which i look forward everyday).

there was one night that i was forcing myself to watch anime when my eyes can barely open and Myat walked in with his signature laugh. and last weekend when i was out with myat, liwern and chenyze, i could not help feeling tired or tipsy after just one or two drinks. that was just weird.

this week was good. have a better grasp of the work pace and also have more control over the whole flow. more organized i would say, but not literally (looking at my work desk). My mentor, Jasmine has left the company. Yesterday was her last day and next week i will be on my own. guess it is do or die.

i am fortunate that she is a patient and nice person. because a lot of things are fresh and new to me. like what wireframes, IA, etc.... i got totally ZERO knowledge about all this things. Yet she was able to be patient and teach me and also pass me a lot of relevant material to read to help me get use to the work. A BIG THANK YOU TO JASMINE! all the best for your new job eh! (not sure if she reads, but oh well...)

on the lighter side of life, i just changed by X2, which a lot say that it is a camera with a phone function; to the Motorola Milestone. Yes, i am on Android now. and just the other day, google just announced the new Android 2.2 - Froyo. a lot of improvements have me made and i am totally looking forward to upgrade the firmware once it is officially released.

i will be changing the other technical blog to blogger again since i can use google analytic and adword together with blogger. i am still a newbie in this. but hopefully i will know more and soon.

alright. enough with the update. gonna go catch up with reading. have my paper about SEO ready just beside me. and hopefully i will be able to setup my account by tonight.

6 days till Sundown marathon! omg. i am so dead!

Chapter 23-05: First taste of work life

*yawns*...

just woke up from a 4 hour slumber. well, i did not hangout till late last night or went to the club. it is just that it is really different lifestyle all together when you are in the real world.

the first week at work was quite eye opening i would say. sitting in the consulting team under the guidance of experienced people around me. i somewhat feel a little uneasy because the knowledge i have now is not enough to contribute to the team. SEO, Data, Website audit... i know nothing at all the first day i joined.

which explains the uneasy feeling during day 1. not sure where to put my hands and legs. what to do and who to ask.

but day 2 was better after my mentor, jasmine told me what the week will be like. being able to dress down everyday somewhat helped to sooth the uneasiness inside me. the first day with whole formal look really makes me look out of place when i sit within the team.

overall the week has been awesome. although it is a bit tiring since i am still adjusting to this new lifestyle. hopefully i can adapt fast enough!!!

one last thing. i am starting a new blog to note down my learning. but i will not share company's client info and stuff of course.

the link is fernyit.wordpress.com

i have not posted anything now. will try to do it a little later =D

till next time! ciao!

Chapter 23-04: New Lifestyle

well. while waiting for shihui (who is always late) at Brewerkz. i think i should do a quick update.

this morning i just went down to BLUE singapore to sign my contract. hopefully i will start work next week after my employment pass got apprived by MoM. i really look forward to it. the team i am posted to - the consulting team has 8 members. and there are 4 other teams in the company (creative, project, digital and technology). a total of 90 members in the BLUE family.

the week is quite packed with home cooked food and also well, alcohol. haha. i love cooking. since i was young i wish that i can grow up to be an excellent chef. partly because i love to eat. but you can't deny the fact that i can cook quite well considering the fact that i am a man and i have not attended any cooking classes. cooking based on observations and also personal taste bud is a bit challenging. especially yesterday i need to chop the whole FAT chicken up. 1.5kg... that is really FAT!!!

hopefully i get more opportunity to cook after i start my job at BLUE. it always makes my day when i see my peeps finishing the huge portion of food i've prepared.

today while at BLUE i also found out that they have a pool table =D more fun ahead!

22 days till Sundown Marathon! time to buck up although i do not see me running that often in the future few weeks. haha. all the best.

and where is shi hui......??? tsk tsk.

chapter 23-03: the job spree

nearly everyday and every night i would be sitting in front of the screen searching and viewing OnTrac, JobsDB, jobstreet and etc etc for a job. after the final exam in SMU, i actually felt lost for the first time. i mean it is like "so what now? what to do today?"

felt so aimless and zombified. walking around, not sure what to do have worse of all, have no motivation.

given the time pressure from my dad - "if until july you have not found a job you better move back to jb."

i am not complaining about jb. i love my home, my family. it is just that once i set foot back home i am not sure if i will get out again. if i will, when?

so ya, the anxiety inside me built up and the wait for reply from the companies i've applied and interviewed. most of them did not get back to me. i am actually grateful to those that even spend the time to forward those standard rejection letter to me and stop me pondering and expecting something from it.

well... at least this waiting spree or job spree has now officially ended.

YES!

I GOT OFFERED AT BLUE!!! =D YAYNESS!!!

well. i was quite shocked myself as well when i woke up from my nap after my morning interview at BLUE and saw on my phone regarding the job offer. i thought i was dreaming and i really pinched myself =P

i've dreamed of working under the WPP family and now i did it! luck is on my side! and i will cherish this opportunity that let me start my career the right way!

what is left now is to find a new roof over my BIG head. lolx. flat hunting spree here i come! =D

PS: if anyone come across a 3 bedroom hdb or apartment that is around 2100 and located near harbourfront and SMU, do let me know k?

thanks!
